I purchased SEMRush last week and completed a Site Audit I couldn’t believe my site had so many problems. The only problem I have is that there are a lot of recommendations but no instructions on how to fix them. Also, some search terms will be misspelled because people are in a hurry to find what they want or maybe using a mobile device to type. This isn’t the only tool that mines Google Autocomplete. There’s also KeywordTool.io, but that restricts results to ~700 keywords. Infinite Suggest is another alternative. But, despite the name, it doesn’t seem to find anywhere near the number of keywords that Keyword Sh*tter finds. And there are tons of other Google Autocomplete miners, too. Google “google auto suggest tool” for more. There’s also this tool from SEOChat. It mines autocomplete suggestions from Google, Bing, Amazon, and YouTube.
I’m a big fan of Semrush however I do find the data more reliable for the bigger markets like the UK and the USA as opposed to Australia or Asian sites. I have generally used it in the past when I have specific projects going on in these larger markets as opposed to subscribing continuously. It is actually quite easy to start and stop the subscription. If I had the ongoing need I would definitely have an ongoing subscription.
I like the ability to compare a client’s website to it’s competition. This feature is awesome. Enables side by side comparisons on how you are doing vs competitors for key metrics such as back links, SERP Results, Domain Strength, etc. The information I can get on Organic Search, Paid Search and keywords is also extremely helpful to the work I do. Absolutely love their keyword research tool. Its phrase and related keywords reports give some really good suggestions and the metrics make it possible to decide upon not just the focus keywords but also some related keywords which make way for a strong keyword strategy. And, the fact that they are building a separate mobile database for keywords is also amazing.
Hi Faizan, glad you found it useful. Yes, SEMrush is definitely one of the best SEO tools out there. When you’re doing keyword research, don’t go for KD score, instead pick low volume keywords with 100 or even 50 monthly searches. And target long tail keywords so you can get traffic from multiple keyword phrases. It might take a good 3 months to get the traffic from search engines if you go that way.
Brian, I have a burning question regarding keyword placement and frequency. You wrote: “Use the key in the first 100 words … “. What else? I use Yoast and a WDF*IDF semantic analysis tool to check the content of the top10 rankings. Pretty often I have the feeling I overdo it, although Yoast and WDF/IDF told me I use the focus keyword not often enough.
